Planning A Move

Hiring a Moving Company? 5 Things You Might Do on Moving Day

When you use a full service moving company, much of the tedious and difficult work of packing and moving is done by them. But if others are doing the heavy lifting — both metaphorically and literally — what should you be doing while they work? Here are a few things to spend your day on.

1. Finalize Your Carry-Ons. Anyone moving houses should have packed a few things to take by hand to the new location. This includes enough clothing and toiletries to get by a few days as well as invaluable documents and fragile items they want to transport themselves. If you've been planning your hand-carry items, seal them up today and place them where they will travel with you.

2. Arrange for Pets and Kids. Pets and little ones can be a challenge on moving day.  They often get in the way of movers and other workers, and they can be overwhelmed by the activity of a moving day. Do yourself a favor and arrange for these to have a safe place to go on the big day where they can enjoy themselves and not be involved.

3. Run Errands. If you've been doing all the prep work for moving day, you can now relax because the professionals are here to take over. Take advantage of having that trained assistance by spending your time doing things you may not have had time for earlier. You might take a last-minute load to the second-hand store, pick up snacks for your helpers, cart around the kids, or check out your storage space, for instance.

4. Be Available. Just because you don't have to do the legwork when moving doesn't mean you want to disappear and leave everyone to fend for themselves. Things will go a lot smoother if you are available to answer questions and direct workers. Stay out of the way but be aware of what's going on. You'll be in a better position to offer input and keep everyone on track to execute your plan using their expertise.

5. Start Cleaning. Whether you will be cleaning alone or you have hired help, you can start cleaning up as the moving crew finishes with locations. The amount of cleanup needed depends on your situation. It could be as simple as going through with a box or bag after the furniture is removed from each room. Or it could involve getting in there with cleaning products and tools. Whatever you do as the movers move on, you'll have less to do later.

Which of these will you opt to do on moving day? With the help of a moving company, you are free to work in peace, direct the action, and reduce your post-move workload. No matter what you do, you'll be in a better position to enjoy the day. Start planning today by consulting with a moving service in your area.
